DeKalb County’s drinking water quality surpasses federal and state standards, according to DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management (DWM) officials.

The information was published with the release of the 2022 Consumer Confidence Report Drinking Water Quality Report (CCR) on Aug. 29.

“DWM continues providing DeKalb County customers with high-quality drinking water (and) surpassing all federal and state drinking water quality standards,” said officials.

According to a press release, the CCR provides information on monitoring data gathered from water quality testing during 2021.

DeKalb County’s water intake, or water source, is located on the Chattahoochee River, north of DeKalb County and upstream from the city of Atlanta. Water is treated at the Scott Candler Water Treatment Plant and then distributed to DeKalb County customers.

Items that may be present in water before it is treated include contaminants such as viruses, bacteria and metals, pesticides and herbicides, organic chemicals and radioactive contaminants. In addition to exceeding the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Primary Drinking Water Regulations, officials with DWM said the county’s drinking water goes through testing as often as hourly.

“DeKalb County drinking water is tested seven days a week at the water treatment plant and five days a week throughout the water distribution system,” states the CCR. “DeKalb County tests its water in full compliance with requirements set by the EPA and the Environmental Protection Division (EPD). Tests are performed by, or under, the direct supervision of state-certified operators and laboratory analysts. The county’s drinking water is also tested regularly for other parameters, including approximately 128 organic chemicals and 25 inorganic chemicals. DeKalb County collects and tests over 250 samples per month from locations throughout the distribution system. Additionally, DeKalb County also conducts 45 daily production control tests, 365 days a year.”

According to the county’s website, DWM currently services more than 5,000 miles of water and wastewater pipes in the county system.
