TOWN OF CAMPBELL, Wis. (WKBT) — The Town of Campbell board passed a motion at Tuesday’s monthly meeting to collaborate with La Crosse County on a 6-month pilot program to collect used PFAS filters. The motion passed unanimously after a presentation and discussion with County representatives.

The program will include an educational element to inform residents of the hazards associated with disposing of PFAS point of use filters in their trash that gets routed to Xcel for incineration. Officials say studies have shown there are adverse health effects associated with incinerating PFAS.

The La Crosse County and Campbell plan will use a dry storage method for used filters. This pilot plan is the first in the State of Wisconsin, which currently has no elevated standards for disposal of PFAS containing filters. This includes larger whole house POET (point of entry) filters.

“With the current rate of filters being used all across Wisconsin it is an environmental and ethical commitment to reduce the rearrangement of PFAS from one media or community to another,” Town of Campbell supervisor Lee Donahue said

Residents will be able to dispose of filters at Town Hall where a labeled container will be used as the disposal receptacle. Donahue says it will be similar to those bringing expired medications to be deposited into a self-serve receptacle for proper disposal. The disposal receptacles for the filters look similar to a sealed 5-gallon pail. Residents are encouraged to bring their used filters in a plastic bag to be placed in the filter disposal containers.

La Crosse County residents who need to safely dispose of whole house filters (which are too large to fit into the current receptacle) should bring them to the La Crosse County Household Hazardous Materials Facility.
